My eight questions about Pompeii.
What happened to Pompeii?
On August 24th, 79 AD, the famous volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted, sending a large cloud of debris into the atmosphere, around twelve miles high, and burying the city of Pompeii in sixteen feet of volcanic ash. A searing combination of pumice (volcanic rock) ahelnd ash, as hot as 704° Celsius, spread down the mountain at seventy miles an hour, ruining everything in its path as it headed towards Pompeii. The eruption of Pompeii lasted twenty four hours, and more then 2000 people died, unable to flee from Pompeii in time to escape. The debris from the volcano buried the people alive, keeping them in the same position as they had been in when they died, keeping the city in the state it had been in 79 AD.

How has Pompeii helped us learn about life in Ancient Rome?
Because of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the debris from the volcano buried the city, preserving it in the state it had been during 79 AD. In 1748 when Pompeii was first excavated, it was soon clear that there were precious artifacts underneath the ash. From the paintings, remaining architecture, people and various other items, people have been able to get a wide insight into what life was like in Ancient Rome, and Pompeii is the main reason how we know so much about life was like back then.

Pompeii was a city living on around 160 acres, with about 20,000 citizens living in it. Pompeii was like an Ancient-Roman holiday town, according to history many rich Romans used to have holiday villas there, and visit on special occasions. Pompeii had many bathing houses, with the men and woman having separate areas to bathe. The houses were different to what we have today, for example, all the living rooms of the house faced inwards, and rainwater would fall through an open skylight to land in a basin in the floor below.

Before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii was a busy city with many people living in it. In 62 AD, most of the city was destroyed by an earthquake, and not everything had been rebuilt when Mount Vesuvius erupted, preserving the town in its natural state. It had temples, a Forum and was modern for its time period.

Pompeii was discovered in the late sixteenth century by a man named Domenico Fontana.
Was Pompeii an important town during Ancient Roman times?
Pompeii was a type of resort city during Ancient Roman times, and many rich Romans had summer homes to stay in when they were visiting Pompeii. It wasn't as important as other major cities, but since it was a resort-type city, it was a loss to the Romans when it was literally wiped off the map because of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
How is Pompeii important to us now?
Pompeii is important to people now because it is an excellent source of history, due to it being contained in its natural state by the debris from the volcano. Because of it being preserved, scientists have been able to learn and teach others about what life must have been like, without having to literally go back in time.
